Niculescu (30, WTA's 100th), fifth seed, won to a 31-year-old player, WTA's 91st, who was seeded third, in two hours and 43 minutes.
The second semifinal will face off German players Sabine Lisicki (WTA's 268th) and Antonia Lottner (WTA's 201st).
